Short sleep has become more common among U.S. young adults. However, with this habits, they will had risk to unhealthy weight.
Recent study showed that poor of sleep duration among young adults will have increases the risk of belly fat, an accumulation of abdominal fat that has strong associated to obesity and cardiovascular disease over a 5-year period.
The study cohort involved 332 African-American and 775 Hispanic-American with the aged range between 18-81 years enrolled in the IRAS (Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study) Family study.
Study author, Kristen G. Hairston, MD, from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, write in longitudinal epidemiologic study report as March issue of Sleep, “In this minority cohort, extremes of sleep duration are related to increases in BMI, SAT, and VAT in persons youngers than 40 years old.”
She added, “As we continue to explore the reasons for the rapidly climbing obesity and diabetes rates among young people, particularly ethnic minority groups, our results linking extremes in sleep duration with increases in abdominal fat areas may explain a component of the increase.”
Get abdominal fat reduction through adequate exercise such as aerobic, sit-ups and healthy diet consumption should be urge applied before had therapy treatment, except that person already presence diabetes disease such as diabetes mellitus type 2 that needs adjunctive therapies which is may prescribed by anti-diabetes medication.
