Late sleep for adolescent more likely to make them easy for depression and possible for suicidal thinking. How come?
There are lot of side effects due to lack of sleep duration such as fatigue, bladder problem, muscle spasms, energy level both mental and physical, anxiety, mood problem, hair loss, poor cognitive, and physichiatric disorder or disturbance.
And from the recent research, late sleep that make them have little sleep duration in adolescent may potential high risk of depression and suicidal thinking.
The study itself done by James Gangwisch, PhD, from Columbia University Medical Center, New York city, and multicenter colleagues.
The study involved 15,659 adolescent which almost get sleep duration about 7 hours and 53 minutes (average) that participate in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health).
The results are 24% are more likely to be depressed and 20% more likely have expression to suicide thinking.
Similarly with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine that recommended for adolescent to get sleep duration at least 9 hours, James recommended to the parents for setting bedtime early and get enough sleep for their child.
On the study also found that adolescent with sleep duration bellow than 5 hours per night, 71% more likely to be depressed and 48% more likely have expression to think suicide compared with adolescent with have sleep duration 8 hours averagely per night.
However, the less sleep also might indicated that they already have depression matter.
So it is important for parent to set and control their child sleep duration.
