A new evidence said that mortality risk among stable coronary heart disease patients increased when the heart rate is high.
This findings based on current large analysis that attempted to identify the role of heart rate in prediction cardiovascular disease risk and mortality from two contemporary clinical trials (TRANSCEND and ONTARGET with total patients investigated was 31,351) and presented this week at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress 2010.
The investigators said that compared with lower heart rates, those with baseline heart rate >70 beats per minute (bpm) had a significantly greater risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, as well as a higher risk of heart-failure hospitalizations.
According to one of authors of the study, Dr Sherryn Rambihar from McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, among people with stable disease on their investigation which had peripheral arterial disease, coronary heart disease, stroke and cerebrovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus with end-organ complications, definitely said that lower heart rate associated with lower mortality and higher heart rate associated with higher mortality.

Dr. Rambihar said, “similarly, from 50 beats per minute, for every 1–beats-per-minute increase in heart rate, the risk increased continuously.”
She add, “It wasn’t linear, but it was a steady, continuous increase, and the relative risk compared with 50 beats per minute increased every step of the way. The further away you got from 50 beats per minute, the higher the risk for patients.”
According to Dr. Rambihar, prevention should be first implemented to reduce the risk factor including exercising and quit smoking.
She explained that smoking people and people with less/no exercise have higher heart rates, therefore, instead medical treatment offered, these preventions should be immediate implemented.
