Recent archives published in May issue of General Psychiatry said that rates of mood and anxiety disorder tend to decrease with age but remain very common, especially in women.

Led researcher, Amy L. Byers, PhD, MPH, from the University of California, San Fransisco, and the San Fransisco VA Medical Center, write, “these are hidden and undertreated but treatable disorders associated with poor health outcomes” related to how important knowledge of the prevalence of mood an anxiety disorder in older as a community-welling adults.

For instance, based on their cohort study results, the author reported “the likelihood of having a mood, anxiety, or combined mood-anxiety disorder generally showed a pattern of decline with age.”

The comparison between young-old group (55-64 years) an oldest-old group (85 years up);

- mood disorder 7.6% vs 2.4%
- anxiety disorder 16.6% vs 8.1%
- both disorder 4.8% vs 0.0%

The researchers concluded, “given the rapid aging of the US population, the potential public health burden of late-life mental health disorders will likely grow as well, suggesting the importance of continued epidemiologic monitoring of the mental health status of the young-old, mid-old, old-old, and oldest-old cohorts.”
