It is important for clinicians and the patients have comfortable conversation when discuss about the orientation and behavior of sexual including their implication related to sex matter between man to men (MSM) as those condition can cause the risk of HIV infection or transmission and syphilis disease.

Recent study showed that risk of HIV and syphilis from this sexual orientation showed had 40-fold of those risk compare with man and women relationship.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis, about 7% of American male have sex with same gender.

By using 5-year recall period and then applied to census data to generate a population-sized estimate (about 4%), David W. Purcell, JD, PhD, from CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, reported at the 2010 National STD Prevention Conference, and colleagues estimated the rate of new HIV diagnosis;
- 522-989 per 100,000 for new cases of HIV diagnosed for MSM
- 12 per 100,000 men (men to women sexual orientation)
- 13 per 100,000 women (men to women sexual orientation)

and the rate of primary and secondary syphilis;
- 91-173 cases per 100,000 for MSM
- 2 per 100,000 for men (men to women)
- 1 per 100,000 for women (men to women)

Dr. Purcell said, “While we’ve known that MSM make up the majority of the HIV epidemic, the new analysis allow us to put number to the disproportionate impact of HIV and syphilis in the gay community.”

As commentary with this analysis finding, Will McFarland, MD, PhD, MPH, from the San Fransico Department of Public Health, said “These finding are very much what I would expect and very credible. There is a global conventional wisdom that the proportion of adult MSM falss between 2% and 5% when speaking of nations and large areas as a whole.”

among this community was more than 44 times

Reported at the 2010 National STD Prevention Conference, David W. Purcell, JD, PhD, from the CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, said, “This first of its kind CDC analysis provides a new look at the stark disparities in HIV and syphilis rates among men who have sex with men. While we’ve known that MSM make up the majority of the HIV epidemic, the new analysis allows us to put numbers to the disproportionate impact of HIV and syphilis in the gay comunity.”
