Patients with have Crohn’s disease and multiple sclerosis often use Tysabri drug as administering for intravenous infusion every several days (i.e. every 28 days).
This drug claimed have improvement the quality of life for multiple sclerosis patient and increase rate of remission including prevent relapse in Crohn’s disease.
However recent updated from FDA notified to healthcare professionals and patients that this drug have potential risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoecephalopathy (PML).
This warning based on report received by FDA about 31 confirmed cases of PML as of January 21, 2010 due to the occurrence of Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS) which characterized by severe inflammatory response that can occur during or following immune system recovery caused an unexpected decline in patients condition after return of immune function.
Patient who develops PML should discontinued use of Tysabri and clinicians should pay attention related to their prescribing.
