Many folate available in the market currently is synthetic form or known as folic acid.
Several previous studies have linked of folate to positive effect in reducing colorectal cancer risk.
In fact, a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on August 3, 2011, by Todd Gibson from the National Center Institute, Maryland, and colleagues said that taking folic acid may reduce the risk of cancer in colon and rectum.
This results based on investigated of diet survey data among more than 500,000 middle-age and older U.S. adult started from 1995.
However, the authors added that the beneficial effect of folate can obtained when the cancer not occur yet. However, when the patients diagnosed with pre-cancer, giving folate may increase the progression of cancer.

Currently, folate intake recommendation for most of adult was 400 mcg and 600 mcg for pregnant women.
This study also agreed with previous findings that suggested consuming fortifying grains with folate may not increase the incidence risk of colorectal cancer.
