Metabolic syndrome may increase the risk of liver cancer

The researchers caution the physicians, health care providers, and individual with metabolic syndrome to be more alert to the risk of cancer, especially with liver cancer.
This is because they found significantly an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) in individual with metabolic syndrome.

The results of this findings just presented at annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AARC) held on April 2011.

They found this relationship after investigated a large population-based study in the Medicare database of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER), which contained the cancer registry data and Medicare enrollment, and claim files.

According to the study authors, Tania M. Welzel, MD, MHS, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute, Rockville, and colleagues, compared to control group, the development of HCC (37.1%) and ICC (29.7%) significantly occurred in individuals with metabolic syndrome conditions, including impaired fasting glucose/diabetes, dyslipoproteinemia, hypertension, and obesity.
