The risk of death from acute lower respiratory tract infection caused by infection of streptococcus pneumonia bacterial is high if not treated immediately, especially for the elderly (over 60 years), children, or those who have some types of chronic diseases such as asthma, impaired lung functions or the heart, and diabetes.
Besides improving healthy lifestyle and medications, consuming zinc supplementation have also been recommended for long in improving the body’s immune, including against bacterial infection attack.
This is also proven after the researchers from the Makerere University of Health Science, Kampala, Uganda, on children aged under 5 years in this country.
In this country, the mortality rate in children due to acute respiratory tract infection is very high.
While there is still pros and cons related to zinc supplement benefits, especially to pneumonia patients, the current study authors found that this supplement really help this children with pneumonia in reducing mortality risk.
This appears after they randomly assigned 352 children suffered with pneumonia (aged 6 months to 5 years) to the groups of zinc supplementation (10 mg for children aged under 12 months and 20 mg for those aged 12 months and older) and and placebo for 7 days.
Reported in BioMed Central on February 8, 2012, the authors conclude, “Given these results, zinc cold be considered for use as adjunt therapy for severe pneumonia, especailly among Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy naive HIV infected children in our environment.”
