Be careful with amphetamine use in pregnant women, increase premature delivery and low birth weight infant

Pregnant women who use amphetamines that widely used to improve the functions of mental and physical such as related to allertness and wakefullness, and reducing fatigue and appetite, should be careful because this drug can worsening their birth outcomes.

At least, new meta-analysis study confirmed that this drug can increase the rate of premature delivery and low birth weight of infants.

This conclusion appeared after the researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada, identified 10 relevant studies for both of risks.

5 studies involved 62,000 women showed methamphetamine exposure linked to preterm birth with unadjusted odds ratio (OR) of 4.11.

2 studies involved 26,000 women showed significantly increased low birth weight (unadjusted OR of 3.97).

3 studies involved 4,300 women showed small gestational age of infants (unadjusted OR of 5.7).

Therefore, whether this drug may benefits for them, using amphetamine during pregnancy should consider the benefits really outweigh the risk.
