Diagnosing major depressive disorder (MDD) with blood test

While this time is not quite easy to determine the status of a person’s depression, particularly those associated with major depressive disorder (MDD), recent study said that diagnosing blood test may be beneficial to diagnose whether the subjects have MDD or not.

This is because from 2 small pilot studies showed high sensitivity in determining depression status with serum-based test, which examines 9 biomarkers.
Of those pilot studies, the sensitivity in detecting MDD is about 91.7% in truly MDD patients and 81.3% in non-depressed healthy subjects.

The reports just published in Molecular Psychiatry on December 13, 2012, by the researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, US.

However, the authors added that previous method in determining MDD with single biomarker into a single measure still beneficial.
