People with genital herpes virus should be careful and get appropriate test for the treatment, because the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) may alter the normal circulation of amyloid preecursor protein (APP) in cells. As the results, the subjects may increase with the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in later life.
This suggestion appeared after the researchers observed new virus particles leaving infected cells and entering cellular membranes containing APP after that herpes virus tagged with green fluorescent protein.
According to the findings that reported on March 31, 2011, in PLoS ONE archive, “Long-term chronic active HSV-1 infection would affect APP distribution, expression, and processing and thereby have significantly more impact than previously considered.”
The study authors, Shi-Bing Cheng, MD, PhD, and colleagues wrote that HSV-1 seropositivity has previously been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, however, the role for the relationship to Alzheimer’s disease risk remain controversial.
But, in their study, they can describes how HSV-1 contribute to Alzheimer’s disease risk.
Overall, they write, “The interaction of HSV-1 with APP shown here suggest a molecular mechanism for the observed epidemiological correlation.”
