Monitoring creatinine levels in the patients after lung transplantation can be important as acute kidney injury (AKI) that occurs in these patients after lung transplants may increasing the death risk by 2-3 times within 2 years.

This suggestion appeared after the researchers evaluated the data on 657 patients who underwent lung transplantation and 424 patients (65%) identified with AKI between 1997 and 2009.

According to the findings that presented at the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) 2011 Clinical Meeting by Rachel Brock, DO, from the Cleveland Clinic’s Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, Ohio, even small changes of serum creatinine levels can significantly influence the outcomes in AKI’s patients after lung transplants.

As kidney injury are common incidence after lung transplantation, the study authors suggested to lung transplant surgeons to aware of their patients by checking their kidney function or send them to a nephrologist.

In their study, of total 424 AKI’s patients, 309 patients categorized as stage 1 injury, and remain patients with stage 2 or 3 injury.
