Oophorectomy, a surgical menopause decreased estrogen levels and increased risk of cardiovascular events, particularly carotid intima media thickness when performed before natural menopause

Compared with natural menopause group, Oophorectomy before menopause could impact to decreasing of estrogen and risks of cardiovascular events, particularly carotid intima media thickness (IMT).

Previous studies had been found the relationship between performed of bilateral oophorectomy before the age of 45 years and increased risk of cardiovascular mortality.

The lead authors of the study, Dr. Enis Ozkaya from Dizkapi Yildirim Beyazit Training and Research Hospital, Ankara, and colleagues investigated among 90 healthy women aged 50 to 78 years.

None of those participants was taking hormones. 55 of them had undergone hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy, and other still had their ovaries and uterus.

Reported in July 23rd in Menopause, after adjusting for age and time since menopause, the investigators found that carotid IMT was significantly higher in the oophorectomy group (0.84 vs 0.76 mm).

In addition, although the difference not significance, they also found that homocysteine levels were also higher.
Also, after adjusting for age, the bone mineral density was reduced in the oophorectomy group.
