Yes, coffee may help lowering the risk of advanced prostate cancer.

Current study presented by American Association for Cancer Research in Hilton said that the men who drank coffee nearly 60% less likely do develop advanced prostate cancer than non-coffee drinkers.

The researcher, Kathryn M. Wilson, PhD, from Channing Laboratory of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health reported, “Very few lifestyle factors have been consistently associated with prostate cancer risk, especially with risk of aggressive disease, so it would be very exciting if this association is confirmed in other studies. Our results do suggest there is no reason to stop drinking coffee out of any concern about prostate cancer.”

It is the first study of its kind to look prospectively at both the overall risk of prostate cancer and the risk of localized vs advanced prostate cancer that has spread beyond the prostate.

Although other researchers said that it’s too early to start recommending that men start drinking coffee to help prevent prostate cancer, however, according to them, this findings are encouraging.

The findings based on assessed data among 50,000 men with coffee-drinking habits during 1986 to 2006 from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.

Also, the investigator found that the prevention effect of coffee benefits showed to those with decaffeinated coffee drinkers who had similar reduction in aggressive prostate cancer risk.

According the investigators, coffee also contains many other potentially beneficial compounds such as antioxidants and minerals that may play a role in preventing prostate cancer and more research is needed to confirm these results.

Despite, other researchers said that the findings to early to conclude the coffee consumption may prevent prostate cancer, Wilson said, “Coffee has effect on insulin and glucose metabolism as well as sex hormone levels, all of which play a role in prostate cancer.”
