So many issued due to dangerous of hormone therapy for people that need treatment for their prostate cancer.
For people who really need this therapy, make sure they know the risk before really take it, especially for the men in the mid-70 or older with have localized prostate cancer.

Recent research showed by adding Neoadjuvant Hormone Therapy (NHT) and Brachytherapy have significant risk of all-cause mortality.
Neoadjuvant hormone therapy often used when need systemic drug treatment prior to surgery for people with have prostate cancer. The purpose of this therapy basically to make easy surgery processing by reducing the size of cancer first.
And, for extend therapy that will be use internal radiotheraphy before doing surgery called Brachytherapy.

Dr. Anthony V. D’Amico senior study author from Harvard Medical School, Boston, said, “This study ‘builds on a growing body of literature’ that suggests NHT, even of shor duration, appears to put a small subset of men at an increased risk for death–not from prostate cancer, but from the interaction of the NHT with some other underlying illness.”

The study based on examination data from 2474 men (median age, 73 years) that have localized prostate cancer which used Brachytherapy, and 1083 of them also used Neoadjuvant Hormone Therapy from 1991 and 2005.

The result founded;
- 65% had low risk with all-cause mortality
- 23% had intermediate risk of all-cause mortality, and
- 12% had high risk of all-cause mortality

Dr. D’Amico said, “There is a direct association between age greather than 70 and the presence of cardiovascular disease, and so it is our presumption that this is what the driving force is behing the increased mortality seen in this study. That is, these men were more likely to have coronary artery disease and therefore when they were exposed to the hormonal therapy they were more likely to have a cardiac event.”

In this study Dr. D’Amico didn’t show specific caused of death and the mechanism of those therapy that associated to cardiac event, but he noted, “for men who require hormonal therapy for treatment of their prostate cancer, some form of cardiac evaluation, yet to be determined, should be done.”
